What is snus?
Short answer
Snus is an oral tobacco product originating in Sweden, containing processed tobacco leaf, placed under the upper lip and never burned. Modern nicotine pouches are often called snus, but they contain no tobacco leaf. That is the main difference between the two.
Key points
- Traditional snus contains processed tobacco leaf.
- Nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf.
- Both go under the lip and neither is burned.
- The two names are frequently used interchangeably in the market.
Where it comes from
Snus is an oral tobacco product originating in Sweden, where it has long been used. It contains processed tobacco leaf, either in small sachets or loose, placed under the upper lip.
Snus is not burned. There is no smoke.
How it differs from a nicotine pouch
This is the most confused point, including in how products are named in the Vietnamese market.
Traditional snus: contains tobacco leaf.
Nicotine pouch: contains no tobacco leaf. The contents are nicotine, flavouring, a powdered filler and a humectant.
Both go under the lip, neither burns. The difference is the presence or absence of tobacco leaf, and that difference carries a different legal classification.
Why the names get mixed up
Nicotine pouches came later and look much like portioned snus. Many sellers call both snus. In Vietnam, common search phrases mix the two names as well.
When you read anything about snus, check whether the source is discussing the tobacco version or the tobacco-free one, because conclusions do not transfer between them.
What we do not claim
We do not say that either category is safe or a way to stop smoking. Nicotine is addictive in every form. If you want to stop altogether, the quitline on 1800 6606 is free.
Common questions
- Are snus and nicotine pouches the same?
- No. Traditional snus contains processed tobacco leaf. A nicotine pouch contains nicotine, flavouring, a powdered filler and a humectant, with no tobacco leaf. The two names are frequently mixed up.
- Is snus legal in Vietnam?
- Snus contains tobacco leaf, so it falls under the rules governing tobacco products. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches are not named in the 2012 Law or in Resolution 173/2024/QH15. These are two different legal positions.
