Short answer

Quitting vaping uses the same evidenced methods as quitting cigarettes: quitline counselling on 1800 6606, nicotine replacement therapy, and prescription medication on a doctor's advice. Pick a specific date, get the device and pods out of the house, and prepare in advance for the moments you reach for it without thinking.

Key points

  • E-cigarettes have been banned in Vietnam since 1 January 2025 under Resolution 173/2024/QH15.
  • The three evidenced methods are the same as for cigarettes.
  • The quitline 1800 6606 is free, 08:00 to 22:00 daily.
  • Students should tell a trusted adult and the school health staff.

What to know first

Electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products have been banned in Vietnam since 1 January 2025, under National Assembly Resolution 173/2024/QH15. The ban covers use, not only sale. Decree 371/2025/ND-CP sets out administrative penalties.

Where to start

Pick a specific date and tell at least one person. Before that date, get the device, the pods and the charging cable out of the house. This is the one real difference from cigarettes: the device usually lives in a pocket all day, so physical distance does immediate work.

List the moments you use it without thinking. For most people that is waiting, stress, or being with a group who also vape. Those are the moments that will be hardest in the first week.

The three evidenced methods

Nicotine dependence is nicotine dependence, whether it arrives from a cigarette or a pod. So the methods with clinical evidence are the same.

Quitline counselling. 1800 6606, free, run by the Respiratory Centre at Bach Mai Hospital, open 08:00 to 22:00 daily.

Nicotine replacement therapy. Patches, gum and lozenges licensed as cessation medicine. Ask a pharmacist or doctor about the right dose.

Prescription medication. On medical advice only.

Counselling combined with medication performs better than either on its own.

If you are a student

Tell an adult you trust, and the school health staff. The quitline does not ask for your name. The hardest part is usually not the nicotine but the group around you, so have an answer ready for the first time you are offered one.

What does not count

Switching to another nicotine product is not quitting. If your goal is to stop nicotine altogether, call 1800 6606. We receive nothing from that call.

Common questions

Are e-cigarettes still allowed in Vietnam?
No. Resolution 173/2024/QH15 prohibits the production, trade, import, storage, transport and use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products, in force from 1 January 2025. Administrative penalties are set out in Decree 371/2025/ND-CP.
Where should a student start?
Start by telling one adult you trust, and the school health staff. The quitline on 1800 6606 is free and does not ask for your name. Getting the device out of your room is the first step that works immediately.
